What's New This Week - February 01, 2024

Each February, individuals across Canada engage in events and celebrations for Black History Month, paying tribute to the enduring legacy of Black individuals and their communities.

For the year 2024, the theme for Black History Month is: "Black Excellence: A Heritage to Commemorate; a Future to Construct." This theme not only acknowledges the significant past and present contributions of Black individuals in Canada but also looks forward to seizing new opportunities in the future.

In alignment with the 10th year of the International Decade for People of African Descent, the theme acknowledges that individuals of African descent constitute a distinct group whose human rights require promotion and protection.

All Canadians are asked to delve deeper into the history of Black Canadian communities and appreciate their ongoing role in shaping the narrative of Canada and our community.

Ontario Training Thousands of New Long-Term Care Staff

$100 million investment will provide 32,000 nursing and personal support worker students with hands-on training

The Ontario government is investing more than $100 million in two programs that will train more than 32,000 new personal support workers (PSWs) and nurses in long-term care over the next three years. The investments are part of the government’s Your Health plan to recruit and retain tens of thousands of long-term care staff over the coming years.

“Our government is fixing long-term care by training, hiring and retaining thousands of health care workers to provide high-quality care for residents,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Long-Term Care. “We’re investing in programs that are building a pipeline of talent for the future and giving them more hands-on clinical training so our long-term care residents get the high-quality care they deserve.”
