We marked the achievements of 2023 with a memorable Annual General Meeting at the Insignia Hotel yesterday.   Celebrating an incredibly busy year of engaging members, advocacy, with 103 new members and 64 events, our small team worked hard to increase our value to our members.
Special thanks to Lambton County Warden, Kevin Marriott, for joining us to swear in the 2024 slate of directors.
We had the pleasure of hearing from our guest speaker, Daniel Tisch, the newly appointed President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.  Daniel gave us an engaging outlook into what is in store for the economy in 2024, the advocacy work that is being done and how the Ontario Chambers and their 60,000 strong business members were a force when advocating for our businesses at all levels of government.
Looking ahead, 2024 has already kicked off with great momentum! Our team is busy planning exciting initiatives, and we're thrilled to embark on this journey with you!

Ontario Investing Nearly $1.3 Billion to Stabilize Colleges and Universities

Province maintaining tuition fee freeze to keep costs down for students and parents

February 26, 2024

The Ontario government introduced a suite of measures to stabilize the province’s colleges and universities, including nearly $1.3 billion in new funding, while maintaining the tuition fee freeze to keep costs down for Ontario students and parents. The province is also introducing legislation that would, if passed, support student mental health, safe and inclusive campuses and allow for increased transparency of fees. This suite of measures also includes initiatives that will help connect students to rewarding careers to help build Ontario’s skilled workforce.

“It’s never been more important to keep costs down for students and parents,” said Jill Dunlop, Minister of Colleges and Universities. “Instead of burdening hard-working families with higher tuition, we’re making historic investments to stabilize colleges and universities. We’re taking action to make fees more transparent. We’re supporting student mental health, fostering safer campuses and preparing students for rewarding careers.”

New legislation would help build housing faster and save families and businesses money

February 22, 2024

The Ontario government introduced legislation that, if passed, would reverse a December 2023 decision by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) that would have significantly increased the costs of building new homes across the province. Reversing this decision will prevent an average of $4,400 being added to the price of new homes, or tens of thousands of dollars being added to the price of a home in rural Ontario.

“Since day one our government has taken action to lower energy costs, including by cancelling the previous government’s cap-and-trade carbon tax and cutting the gas tax,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy. “While previous governments implemented schemes that led to skyrocketing energy prices, we’re using every tool in our toolbox to keep costs down for people and businesses. The Keeping Energy Costs Down Act will protect future homebuyers from increased costs and keep shovels in the ground on critical infrastructure projects.”

On February 1, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Perrin Beatty, announced the launch of a new Canada-U.S. Engagement Plan, aimed at providing Canadian businesses opportunities to increase ties with U.S. counterparts and policymakers.

Earlier that week, Mr. Beatty spoke with the Honourable Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, on the importance of Canada’s trade relationship with the United States. All agreed that an increased U.S. presence by Canadian business and other stakeholders will help strengthen the relationship between our two countries.

As part of its plan, the Canadian Chamber will lead four business missions to the United States in 2024 that will focus on key areas of the Canadian economy where there are significant opportunities for growth and synergy with the U.S. economy: life sciences, Canada-U.S. trade, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.

Mental health promotion is the process of enhancing an individual’s capacity to increase control over their lives and improve their mental health. Mental health promotion is not just about focusing on risk factors for mental illness but seeks to create and support environments that enhance positive mental health. Promoting mental health requires that mental and physical health be considered together, not independently, as “there is no health without mental health.”

In workplaces, mental health promotion strategies can help organizations achieve their potential by promoting employee health. This may include activities, initiatives, and/or policies developed to continually enhance the well-being of all working populations. It is important to remember that results don’t happen overnight; but a commitment and dedication to implementing mental health promotion strategies can result in a positive change.  Learn more about how you can begin to impact positive change in your workplace.
