Chamber's Statement of the Recent Tariff Announcement
The global economy is not a reality show - businesses and investors deserve thoughtful policymaking and consistent, predictable conditions, not political theatrics. Our political leaders need to put aside division and work together to provide the certainty and stability that our economy requires. This tariff crisis has evolved into a global challenge, but it also presents new opportunities for Canada to forge new partnerships and seize emerging possibilities. Now is the time for bold, collaborative action to protect Canadian interests and position our country for long-term prosperity.
Chamber Advocacy at Work
Letter To Council
The Sarnia Lambton Chamber of Commerce is committed to advocating on behalf of our members to ensure a strong, competitive, and sustainable business environment. We actively engage with all levels of government, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to address key issues that impact local businesses. Through strategic advocacy efforts, we work to influence policies that foster economic growth, reduce regulatory burdens, and support the success of our diverse business community.
A recent example of our advocacy efforts is our formal submission to the Department of Finance regarding the proposed 25% tariff on imported books. This policy change could significantly impact local businesses, educational institutions, and consumers by increasing costs and limiting access to vital resources. The Chamber is voicing concerns on behalf of our members, emphasizing the importance of affordable access to knowledge and the potential economic repercussions of such a tariff. By taking proactive steps to engage in this discussion, we continue to stand up for policies that support business growth and community well-being.
Across Canada, businesses are feeling the impact of market uncertainty. Export Development Canada (EDC) understands the challenges that exporters—the primary contributors to our economy—are confronting. For more than 80 years, we’ve stood tall when Canadian companies needed us most. Now, we’re moving quickly to provide meaningful support to Canadian exporters and investors as you adjust and adapt to these new market realities.
The EDC Trade Impact Program will facilitate an additional $5 billion over two years in support for eligible companies across a range of products to help you navigate economic challenges.

New BDL Research on U.S. Cities Most Export-Dependent on Canada
As key partners in the success of Canadian businesses, we want you to be among the first to learn about the latest study from the Business Data Lab: "Which U.S. Cities Are Most Dependent on Exports to Canada?" This report reinforces the deep interdependence of our North American economies by identifying the 41 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) most dependent on Canadian trade and the economic risks they face from weakening demand or rising trade barriers. This serves as the counterpart to our previous research on Canadian cities’ exposure to the U.S. market.
